The Early Beatles Collection @ Leica Gallery Los Angeles
The Early Beatles Collection By Astrid Kirchherr
September 7 – October 19, 2013
OPENING RECEPTION: September 7, 6 pm-8 pm
At age 22, Astrid Kirchherr, a fashion and art school graduate, accompanied her bohemian friends to the Kaiserkeller Club in Hamburg, Germany to hear some new rock and roll played by a young group of musicians from Liverpool, England. Kirchherr was overwhelmed by what she saw and heard:
“It was like a merry-go-round in my head. They looked absolutely astonishing… My whole life changed in a couple of minutes. All I wanted was to be with them and to know them.” – Astrid Kirchherr
Kirchherr’s fast friendship with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Pete Best, Stuart Sutcliffe, and eventually with Ringo Starr, resulted in her capturing an exhilarating time in rock and roll history. Her “Early Beatles Collection,” much of which was photographed with a Leica camera, is one of the most important photographic records of this time in 20th-century popular culture. Kirchherr’s lens caught the members of The Beatles as they transitioned from unknown teenagers to famous rock stars.
