Jeffrey Silverthorne, The Precision of Silence
Retrospective
First European retrospective, the exhibition highlights the work of Jeffrey Silverthorne (born 1946), American photographer exploring consistently for forty years the most extreme subjects. Morgues, where in the 1970s, sometimes to transcend the representation of death, raw portraits of transvestites and transsexuals, the representation of the body in all its forms remains a recurring theme in his work. The references to the great masters of painting mingle with experiments on the photographic medium: layering, cuttings, collages …
Death, sex … the artist scrutinizes anxieties, obsessions and confronts us with visceral fears to help us better dominate.
Claude Batho, Poetry of the intimate
Through her photographs, Claude Batho (1935-1981) was attached to the simplest objects that were her daily life to familiar landscapes, her inner circle. The apparent simplicity of representations gives way to sensibility, a silent beauty often associated with silver prints in black and white. This simplicity makes poetry and triumph of banality. The photography of Claude Batho reads like a diary in which subjects are not extraordinary moments in life but ultimately insignificant and immutable moments.
