ROBERT BURLEY: THE DISAPPEARANCE OF DARKNESS
January 22 – April 13, 2014
Since 2005, Canadian photographer Robert Burley has documented the demise of film manufacturing facilities and industrial darkrooms around the world. His large-format colour prints visually record the abrupt breakdown of this century-old industry and allude to the major economic impact caused by the shift away from analogue photography to digital technology. Yet, the artist embraces the infinite possibilities of digital technology, re-appropriating videos and photographs found on the Internet. Burley’s work strikes a subtle balance between the commemoration of the disappearance of now obsolete film-based photography materials and the celebration of cutting-edge visual technology.
