Hamburg in Photographs 1870–1914 / 2014
Georg Koppmann, Wilhelm Weimar / Rafal Milach, Michal Luczak
HAMBURG MUSEUM, 19 June to 18 October 2015

Two photographers were commissioned by the state at the end of the 19th century to document the development of the city of Hamburg. Georg Koppmann was authorized by the Hamburg government to photograph changes in structures, streets and the harbor. 24 years later, a monument image archive was created by Wilhelm Weimar, assistant to Justus Brinckmann (1843–1915), founding director of the Hamburg Arts and Crafts Museum.
Quiet Peasants and Sturdy Fishermen? Northern Germany in Photography
ALTONAER MUSEUM, 19 June until 22 November 2015

When we hear “Northern Germany,” most of us spontaneously describe a certain image. Our collective imagination of what landscapes look like is usually derived from pictures we have seen. But what about that typical image of Northern Germany we all seem to have in mind? How is it generated and what is the role of photography in that process? The extensive collection of historical photographs at the Altonaer Museum can serve as source material for researching these questions, as was done by Agnieszka Rayss from Sputnik Photo. Her photo series show how museums construct realities with their collections and how the collections leave their imprint on the perception of a landscape.
