Common Ground: A Celebration of Our National Parks @ David Brower Center
Common Ground: A Celebration of Our National Parks
May 20 – September 8, 2016
Opening reception Friday, May 20, 2016
Historically, the arts have proven to be an essential ally to national parks advocates. Deeply moved by paintings of Yosemite by Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Hill and Thomas Moran, President Lincoln reserved the land for public use, resort and recreation in 1864. Paintings and photographs of Yellowstone had a similar effect on the president, and in 1872 he declared it the first national park. In 1940, David Brower and Ansel Adams successfully influenced Franklin D. Roosevelt to establish Kings Canyon National Park after they presented Sierra Nevada: the John Muir Trail, a portfolio of photographs by Adams.
