Lana Z Caplan : Dunites
September 4-29, 2018
Opening Reception September 4, 6-8pm
“This show will be the first unveiling of work culminating from of two years of research in the Oceano Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, a unique landscape on the central coast of California. The Dunes have a rich history and a contentious present. These are Dunes of the Chumash, a people nearly erased by the arrival of Spanish Missionaries; the Dunes of Cecil B. DeMille’s ancient Egyptian Ten Commandments movie set; the Dunes of the Dunites, the artists, poets, nudists, and mystics living off the grid in the depression era; the Dunes of Edward Weston and Ansel Adams’ sensual perfection; and the Dunes of the current day Dunites: the ATV riders who tear through the endangered plant species and pollute the air by grinding the sand into fine airborne particulates.”
