Aapo Huhta: Block
10 Aug – 15 Sept 2019
Vernissage Fri 9 Aug at 5pm
“Block is a photographic essay about contemporary city life and the people?s role in it. The images offer their viewer a dystopic scene of a metropolis. Money rules and people are looking for happiness, each other and the meaning of life. Block is something between documentary project and staged images. Visually they represent absolute minimalism. Concrete jungle is highlighted and humans are photographed from a distance. The name of the project is not only a word we use to describe distances in a city but more of a reference to the distance between people. The project makes the viewer ask if this really is the world we wanted to build.
Photographs for the series were shot in New York between 2014 and 2015. Block has also been shown in Fotografiska in Stockholm and Kehler Gallerie in Berlin in 2018, in Great Space in Helsinki in 2018 and in Photographic Centre Nykyaika in 2019. Kehrer Verlag published the project as a book in 2015.
Aapo Huhta (1985) is a Helsinki based photographer. He holds an MA in photography from the Aalto University of Arts and Design, Helsinki Finland.”
