Dana Lixenberg: Imperial Courts 1993−2015
2. August − 28. September 2019
“In the center of Imperial Courts 1993-2015 the residents of Watts, a precarious district in Los Angeles South Central stand. Trigger for Dana Lixenbergs long-portrait study were the riot of 1992 that had shaken as a result of the acquittal of the four police officers who the African-American Rodney King in 1991 severely abused when he was arrested, and all of Los Angeles. Lixenberg had documented the unrest on behalf of a Dutch magazine and became interested in the connection for the fates of individual residents.
During several visits in 1993 she portrayed the local people again in classic black and white large format outdoors in natural light. The portraits are based on mutual respect and show portrayed as self-confident as well as vulnerable individuals.”
