RENÉ BURRI: Les Allemands
4 march – 18 April 2020
OPENING on Tuesday 3rd of March from 6.30 pm
” René Burri joined Magnum Photo a decade after Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour, Robert Capa and Georges Rodger founded the legendary agency in Paris and New-York in 1947. He became a member in 1959.
Around the same time, as a 24-year-old fledgling photojournalist with a German mother and a Swiss father, he began exploring his mother’s homeland, doing reportage for the illustrated press in Germany, a country divided, but in the midst of reconstruction.
He discovered a country undergoing massive industrialization, galvanized by new youth, filled with shiny new cars, lovers in bumper cars, and elegantly turned-out women. When the wall went up between the two Germanys on August 13, 1961, at a time when photo-reportage was booming, René Burri realized how important was to get those images published. To bear witness to that historical moment, and to inscribe it in our memory.”
