Randa Mirza: Beirutopia & View From Home
August 13 – September 25, 2021
“Since the end of the Lebanese civil war, Beirut has been striving to regain its splendor through a building boom fueled by large inflows of foreign capital. In order to advertise their buildings, real estate agencies put up huge billboards around the construction sites, which represent the result of their cityscapes; these image syntheses simulate the buildings, their interiors, the surroundings, the ghostly inhabitants and the lifestyle.
For the past ten years, Randa Mirza has photographed these virtual renderings as they are embedded in their real environment. This dichotomy and juxtaposition evokes the uncanny in these photographs. Her “Beirutopia” series reflects the transformation of the city of Beirut, which heralds the bursting of the Lebanese economic bubble and ongoing financial collapse.”
