THE CONSOLATION OF MEMORY: HOW WE SURVIVED COMMUNISM AND EVEN LAUGHED.
26 August to 24 September 2021

International group exhibition

Around thirty years ago, major social changes took place in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and some countries of the former socialist bloc declared their independence. On this occasion we want to turn our gaze to the recent past and ask ourselves how photography recorded the time that led to these unique social changes. However, in this exhibition project we are not interested in important historical events and great personalities, but we want to offer an insight into the everyday lives of ordinary people and explore the contradictions of the social system that built on a utopian vision of the future. In order to revisit the “family albums” of some former socialist countries, we invited some important photographers from the CEE region, who documented the contradictions of life in Eastern Europe in the 1970s and 1980s in various ways, all sharing a subjective view of the banal, everyday life.

Participating photographers: Vladimir Birgus (CZ), Janez Korošin (SLO), Branko Lenart (AUT), Zora Plešnar (SLO), Anton Podstraský (SK), János Szász (HUN), Lenke Szilagyi (HUN), Andrzej Baturo (POL).
