Anastasia Samoylova: Floridas
from January 19, 2022
“Sunshine State. Swamp paradise. Tourist aspiration. Oscillating political state. Home of the real estate scam. Shelter from excess. Subtropical fever dream. The place where image and reality become inseparable. With forms of nature and culture found nowhere else, Florida is unique. It is also among the most elusive and misunderstood places in the United States of America.
Samoylova’s Floridas series documents all of this in a layered portrait of contemporary Florida, while also establishing a dialogue with the work of Walker Evans, the American photographer who documented the state between the 1930s and 1970s. Like Evans , Samoylova moves between color and black and white, looking closely at the revealing details of landscapes, cityscapes, people, objects, and interiors that speak volumes about culture and social values. With her bright, vivid images and sharp juxtapositions, Anastasia Samoylova offers a test of resistance to the iconic narratives of the American Dream.”
