David Staretz: Odessa
until the end of July 2022
“The author and photographer David Staretz has been touring the Black Sea city of ODESSA regularly for twenty years. He was assisted by his Russian wife Viktoriya, who, thanks to her Russian language and warmth, gave him access and acquaintances that would probably have remained hidden from a tourist. Staretz: ” Odessa is reminiscent of an idealized Vienna that never existed like this, but with a cliff and a port. A city of longing, without realizing what the fascination actually consists of. In any case, the Odessites love animals. Stray dogs get in Winter sweater. And they love their city, so they leave everything as it is: magnificently decayed. But love doesn’t necessarily have to do with beauty. That’s why the book isn’t an ode to the city, but simply shows what it looks like here and feels: Poor, funny, scabby, decayed, humanly warm, so innocent in a way. “.”
