Hannah Darabi: Soleil of Persian Square
December 3, 2022 − January 28, 2023
Opening: Friday, December 2, 2022, 7 p.m
Artist Talk at FOTOHOF: December 3, 2022, 11 a.m
“With Soleil of Persian Square , Hannah Darabi embarks on a search for the visual identity of the Iranian diaspora in Los Angeles. Since the Islamic revolution in 1979, which triggered a huge wave of emigration, the largest Iranian community outside of Iran has been in the United States. Just over a third of Iranians living in the United States settled in Los Angeles and the surrounding small towns, particularly Orange County. Hannah Darabi tries to give a face to this area, also referred to colloquially as “Tehrangeles”. As a teenager in Tehran, she became acquainted with it through various pop-cultural sources that were often not freely accessible. Since the Islamic revolution, pop music has not been considered compatible with state morality, which is why it was not officially available in Iran.”
