Keliy Anderson-Staley: Documents & Dwellings
July 2 – Sep 18, 2022
Documents & Dwellings brings together projects spanning 22 years of my practice, including Shelter in Place, reconstructed on the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Harvey; my Baking Pan series; my newest paper installations built out of archives from the Maine cabin where I grew up; and 12 handmade artist’s books. I see the cabin, the tintype house and the books as analogies for each other–ways of organizing relationships and making sense of stories and their connections to place, images and documents.
As Rachel Afi Quinn writes in her essay accompanying the exhibition:
“Reflecting on her childhood, the artist describes the cabin she grew up in as a ‘microcosm.’ Its repeated reference in Documents & Dwellings materializes as a now missing container… The cabin was itself an archive and the site of Anderson-Staley’s early intellectual formation, capturing the geography of her family relationships. When her father sold the ninety acres that he built it on, the new owners removed the structure by burning it to the ground. Anderson-Staley has described its absence now, and the lingering feeling that it might still be there just over the next ridge, as something akin to ‘phantom limb syndrome.'”
