RECEPTION Thu, Jun 29; 6:00 – 8:00pm
MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Thesis Exhibition 2023, an exhibition of works by 16 graduates of the class of 2023, curated by Nat Trotman, Curator, Performance and Media, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
“The 2023 MFA Thesis Exhibition in the Department of Photography, Video, and Related Media gathers sixteen artists who employ a range of mediums—including print photography, painting, sculpture, installation, and moving image—to formulate distinctive statements about the world and our relations with it. A sense of disaffection proliferates in these projects, as the artists repeatedly confront systems within nature and society that make little space for individual expression. In this exhibition, seemingly objective views of landscape belie more subjective topographies inflected by intimate memories, domestic spaces, or past traumas. People, when they appear, barely emerge from the shadows, isolated even when they are surrounded by others. Pervasive digital interfaces—from news media to screen technologies to artificial intelligences—furtively influence our perceptions and ability to relate to one another. And yet possibilities for compassion endure, as projects ask us to engage in heartfelt conversation, to come together in the experience of an immersive installation, or simply to observe the care with which their works have been crafted.
As they grapple with issues of connection and disconnection, alienation and communion, freedom and control, the artists assembled in this exhibition and its related screening program reexamine reality and interrogate the ways in which we collectively navigate its complexities. Their emotionally, intellectually, and aesthetically resonant thesis projects remind us to look, to question, to feel—and to act. Together, they demonstrate the power of lens-based media as a beacon of hope and possibility to collectively see the world anew.” — Nat Trotman
