JOAKIM ESKILDSEN: SKAGEN
May 26 to July 29, 2023
Opening Thursday, May 25 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
“Located in the far north of Denmark, the town of Skagen is known for its fishing port, its old yellow houses and its 46 meter high lighthouse. But this small Scandinavian town also has an astonishing particularity: its light, the result of a magical encounter between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Depending on the weather, the seasons and the undulating colors of the city, Joakim Eskildsen photographs what is emerging in front of him: portraits of villagers, seaside, deserted buildings. The photographer “sculpts” the light, in his surreal way to the point that it seems to merge with that, so singular, of Flemish painting. In the contemplative images of Joakim Eskildsen, emerges a poetic decor constructed using a palette of colors borrowed from the light of day and the softness of the night.”
