VALERIE JOUVE: BREAKS
APRIL 6 TO MAY 20
Opening Thursday April 6 from 6 p.m.
“As Gertrude Stein said, “a tree is not just a tree is not just a tree”. Like a Figure, Character almost, it seems that a pronoun is missing, not quite sure that it is “she”. If it embodies an idea of resistance, it’s also because it resists giving substance to the Idea. If that’s her, image or bark; he is not the Character of his Figure, not quite. What there is to do, we guess, like the Landscape, more or less devastated. Meanwhile, in three steps, open the space. A story of contradicting, counter-framing, counter-showing history. Without capitals, that of the breaks that move: the motionless moves, green gray black brown ocher. Often brutal, always singular, not being implies a dance. “It’s not self-evident” as the other writing with Minuscule said. Like “trunk”, like “leaves”, like “rock” or “wave” that lifts the earth.”
