Joshua Lutz: Orange Blossom Trail
November 7 – December 21, 2024
Opening reception on Thursday, November 7, 6-8PM
“‘Before it was baptized as The Orange Blossom Trail, the land lay untouched and pristine, a vast expanse of wilderness teeming with life. Native flora and fauna thrived, and ancient tribes found solace in its sacred embrace.
Centuries passed, witnessing the ebb and flow of history until the lure of opportunity and the promise of prosperity beckoned. The success, if we can call it that, of this land came at a dark and hidden cost. Behind the idyllic image of flourishing orange groves, the backbreaking work of cultivating and tending the fruit was carried out by enslaved individuals, their suffering and toil concealed by a veil of confusion and denial. The truth of their labor remains a haunting reminder of the shadows cast by progress and ambition. In the early 20th century, a new identity emerged, marketed as The Orange Blossom Trail. Established as a scenic route connecting the bountiful orange groves of Central Florida, the Orange Blossom Trail soon gained popularity as a desirable destination for those seeking an idyllic escape from the struggles of modern urban existence. The trail was not only an antidote but also gave purpose to a lifestyle driven by the very consumption that created it.”
