Tim Smith: The Hutterites: In the World but Not of It
April 10-June 29

“Manitoba-based photographer Tim Smith has spent the last 15 years photographing the close-knit communal community of the Hutterites. This pacifist Anabaptist group has roots going back to the 16th-century Reformation. They live communally in colonies spread across western Canada and the northwestern U.S., keeping their culture alive by staying separate from mainstream society and focusing on self-sufficiency. Sharing everything they have is a core part of who they are, making them stand out from other religious groups and the modern world. With over 45,000 members living in about 500 colonies, they have created one of the most successful examples of communal living today.

Smith’s photos and stories capture the everyday moments of Hutterite life, from their faith and family connections to how they handle the push and pull between tradition and change. The exhibition gives viewers a chance to see beyond the stereotypes and get a real sense of what life is like in these close-knit colonies.”
