Book Review: Wilderness to Wasteland by David T. Hanson
I approach this book by looking at the pictures. And, while “knowing” that what my eyes are showing me happens to be wasteland (the title, after all, says: Wilderness to Wasteland), I assume I shouldn’t be pleased by what I’m looking at … but I am, I like these pictures, and feel attracted to them.

Book Review: The Modern Kids by Jona Frank (Essay by Bruce Weber)
It’s important to note that Jona Frank is a female photographer. It’s not just that she was an outsider in a male dominated sport and culture; that alone was probably hard enough to overcome while shooting in the gyms and earning the trust of the young men she was photographing and interviewing. In the Fall of

Book Review: Deep Valley Dark Days by Danny Ghitis
Deep Valley, Dark Days, a self-published book by Brooklyn-based commercial and editorial photographer Danny Ghitis, is the result of a stay in upstate New York (thanks to an artist’s residency). On his website, he provides valuable background information as to how his work came about. He felt “unmoored after the end of a long relationship“

Book Review: Robert Herman’s The Phone Book
Robert’s last book The New Yorkers was a testament to street photography within the limits of NYC. The Phone Book takes that very same principle of street photography and puts it on a global stage. However, all photos were taken with Robert’s cell phone using the Hipstamatic app and yielded amazing results. Robert’s phone photography

Book Review: On the Nest by Dona Schwartz
Dona Schwartz describes her book as such: “In On the Nest, I use environmental portraiture to examine two moments of change that bookend parents’ lives—the transition to parenthood with a first child’s birth, and the transition to life without day-to-day responsibility for parenting when young adults leave their childhood homes.” The book is comprised of

Book Review: War is Beautiful by David Shields
It is not often that one comes across a photo book cover that is meant to be read. In fact, among the many photo books that have passed through my hands I do not recall a single cover that provided a brief introduction. And, heaps of praise from well-known people. The intro by David Shields

Book Review: Naked Reflections by Peter Suschitzky
Committing to shooting nudes as a photographer is tough. It’s a road that has been traveled down many times since man laid eyes on woman. How many sculptures and paintings were dedicated to women before the camera came along? Our museums are filled with nudes throughout history. There are even nudes in the pyramids. What

Book Review: Seascapes by Hiroshi Sugimoto
When it comes to photo books one always has the choice. One can start with the pictures or with the introduction to the pictures. I have no idea why I do sometimes prefer the pictures to the intro or vice versa. In the case of Seascapes by Hiroshi Sugimoto I started with the pics. What we

Book Review: Briefly Seen: New York Street Life by Harvey Stein
Growing up in NYC one can’t describe the sheer magic of the place. It’s also tough to describe how at times NYC can be the greatest thing on this Earth as well as just one big balled fist of anxiety and emotion. Harvey Stein captures the emotion of New York along with the good, bad,
