Cody Schultz — Nort’s Resort
The property so named Nort’s Resort was purchased in the mid-1980s by my grandparents, for use as a close-to-home vacation home. As owners of a business, it was difficult for them to go away for vacations with their two sons - my father and uncle - and so they felt it best to find property within a hundred miles of their home. As luck would have it, the stars aligned and the hard work began for them to make the wooded area a place which they could build a cabin upon and truly enjoy for all its solitude.
It was upon this property where I spent a vast majority of my weekends. Not only did I learn to fish and hunt, swim and ride ATVs, I also learned to appreciate nature for all it provides us.
It was because of this property that I began looking to nature as a place of healing, both artistically as well as personally.
My engagement with photography began as a need to express myself, as a way to help heal my wounded mental health. Over the years, it has become a way in which to find meaning in life and the world around me. Photography provides me with an open invitation to explore and engage with nature in ways I had not previously thought possible. While I initially went into the woods to make photographs, I now got into the wild to enjoy the solitude, the stillness; the photographs resulting from these treks are simply byproducts, rather than goals.
