Nika Pailodze — Mountianous Adjara
Georgia is a country located in the Caucasus region. Its location has resulted in a natural landscape and cultural diversity. This series of photographs is dedicated to one of the regions of Georgia, Adjara. More precisely, about the highland villages of this coastal region, most of which are located in the alpine zones. This region is also distinguished by the fact that Muslims and Christians have been living peacefully for many years. People still lead a nomadic lifestyle. Four months a year they climb the mountains and graze cattle. They cook unique dishes. Civilization has not yet fully entered here And in many places there is still no telephone service, let alone the Internet. Despite the fact that young people go to the pastures less often, large numbers of people still gather at the festivals and celebrate the days that each mountain has its own day. In winter, the pastures are empty.
I was born in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, in 1995. From a young age, I was interested in various genres of visual art. In 2012, I enrolled in university to study literature. Until 2012, I took photos using a mobile phone. Starting in 2012, I began shooting with a small digital camera. I captured everything—streets, people, travel moments.
In 2015, I started shooting on film and using a semi-professional camera borrowed from friends. In 2017, I won the National Geographic Georgia competition, which allowed me to purchase my first camera. Since then, I have participated in numerous competitions and achieved success in many of them.
I am not a commercial photographer. I mainly shoot only what I want. Recently, I have developed an interest in project-based photography and have been photographing the mountainous region of Adjara for the past three years.
In addition to photography, I also create short videos, which stems from my love for cinema. I have worked in many different photographic genres, which has somewhat blurred the boundaries between them for me. Most of my time is spent either taking street photos or thinking about staged scenes to shoot.
